She told Jim “No surprises!” but knew he wouldn’t keep to it. He never did.

She feigned innocence, secretly visualizing how she’d open her mouth in wide artificial astonishment to her friends cheering “Happy birthday!”

She was ready.

They walked in, switched on the lights.

The house was empty.
